Maximizing Home Security with a Video Doorbell

The Importance of a Video Doorbell

Imagine this scenario…

It’s the middle of the night, you’re home alone, and you bolt upright in bed because the doorbell has just awakened you. What do you do?

In days gone by, most of us would flip on the outside light and open the door to see who was there. But now, with property theft and violent crime on the rise, most of us hear our doorbell and hesitate to open the door.

One surefire way to protect yourself and your family is to install a video doorbell.

Save $100 on our Video Doorbell (Installation Included)

Benefits of Having a Video Doorbell

Property Protection
Guard against property theft, damage, and home invasions.

Control Over Visitors
Decide whether to answer the door or not based on who is there.

Package Safety
Know when packages are delivered and protect them from porch pirates.

Communication
Speak to visitors remotely using two-way audio.

Enhanced Visibility
See your entire front step area with advanced video quality, even in the dark.

How Video Doorbells Work

Although the technology of a video doorbell is quite advanced, the installation is simple, and the device is easy to use:

Connection
Video doorbells connect to your home’s existing doorbell wiring, or they can be wireless and connected via WiFi.

Notification
When the doorbell is pressed, or motion is detected, you receive an alert on your smartphone.

Live Feed
Watch a live video feed of your doorstep from your phone.

Two-Way Talk
Speak to visitors through the doorbell camera if it has a speaker.

Types of Video Doorbells

The type of doorbell camera you choose depends on your security needs. Popular options include Ring, Vivint, SimpliSafe, Arlo, and Nest Hello. Some considerations to take into account are:

Storage
Cloud or local video storage and associated costs.

Motion Detection
Sensitivity and notification settings.

Video Quality
Clarity and resolution required for effective use.

Compatibility
Integration with existing security systems and smart home devices.

Additional Features
Two-way audio, night vision, package detection, facial recognition, and customizable motion zones.

Planning Your Surveillance System

Assess Your Security Needs:
Identify vulnerable areas around your home or business. Determine the level of coverage required (e.g., entrances, perimeters, high-traffic areas).

Select the Right Equipment:
Choose cameras suitable for your environment (indoor vs. outdoor, weatherproof, night vision). Consider additional features such as motion detection, two-way audio, and high-definition video.

Create a Budget:
Establish a budget for equipment, installation, and ongoing maintenance. Prioritize essential components first, then plan for future upgrades.

Camera Placement and Coverage

Strategic Positioning:
Place security cameras at key entry points (front and back doors, windows, garage). Cover high-traffic areas and potential hiding spots (driveways, walkways, backyards).

Optimal Height and Angle:
Install cameras at an optimal height (8-10 feet) to avoid tampering and capture clear footage. Angle cameras downward to maximize field of view and reduce blind spots.

Avoid Obstructions:
Ensure cameras are free from obstructions such as trees, walls, or other objects. Regularly trim foliage and maintain clear lines of sight.

Maximizing Video Quality

Resolution and Frame Rate:
Use high-definition cameras (1080p or higher) for clear and detailed footage. Adjust frame rates based on your storage capacity and security needs (15-30 fps for most scenarios).

Lighting Conditions:
Ensure adequate lighting in monitored areas, especially at night. Use infrared or low-light cameras for better night vision performance.

Lens and Field of View:
Choose cameras with a wide-angle lens for broader coverage. Use adjustable lenses to focus on specific areas or zoom in on important details.

Enhancing System Reliability

Power Supply:
Use a reliable power source, and consider backup power options like batteries or generators. For wired systems, ensure proper cable management and protection against environmental damage.

Network Stability:
Use a stable and secure network connection for IP cameras. Consider using a separate network for surveillance to avoid bandwidth issues.

Regular Maintenance:
Perform routine checks on cameras and equipment to ensure they are functioning correctly. Clean camera lenses regularly to maintain clear image quality.

Effective Monitoring and Alerts

Real-Time Monitoring:
Use monitoring software or apps to view live footage from your cameras. Set up multiple viewing options (smartphones, tablets, computers) for convenience.

Motion Detection and Alerts:
Enable motion detection to receive alerts for suspicious activity. Adjust sensitivity settings to reduce false alarms from animals or weather.

Recording and Storage:
Use a reliable storage solution (cloud storage, local DVR/NVR) to save footage. Set up recording schedules or event-based recording to optimize storage usage.

Integrating with Smart Home Systems

Smart Home Compatibility:
Choose surveillance equipment that integrates with your smart home ecosystem (Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit). Automate security routines (e.g., turning on lights when motion is detected).

Remote Access:
Use mobile apps to access your surveillance system from anywhere. Ensure secure access with strong passwords and two-factor authentication.

Privacy and Legal Considerations

Privacy Zones:
Configure cameras to avoid capturing private areas (e.g., neighbours’ property). Use privacy masks to block out sensitive areas in the camera’s field of view.

Compliance with Laws:
Familiarize yourself with local laws and regulations regarding surveillance. Inform visitors or employees about the presence of surveillance cameras where required.

Data Protection:
Encrypt stored footage to protect against unauthorized access. Regularly update firmware and software to patch security vulnerabilities.

Emergency Preparedness

Backup Plans:
Have a backup plan in place for power or network outages. Battery-powered cameras or UPS systems are used to ensure continuous recording.

Incident Response:
Establish protocols for responding to security breaches or suspicious activity. Train family members or employees on how to use the surveillance system effectively.

Reviewing and Analyzing Footage

Regular Reviews:
Periodically review footage to ensure system effectiveness and identify potential improvements. Use analytics software to detect patterns or unusual activity.

Incident Investigation:
Use recorded footage to investigate and resolve security incidents. Share relevant footage with law enforcement if necessary.

Continuous Improvement

Stay Updated:
Keep up with the latest advancements in surveillance technology. Regularly evaluate and upgrade your system to maintain optimal security.

Feedback and Adjustments:
Gather feedback from family members or employees on the surveillance system’s performance. Make adjustments to camera placement, settings, or protocols based on feedback.

I was a customer of Bell/MTS for 25 years until they decided to sell off the alarm division to an American company API. The service was so shocking that we quickly looked for a local family owned business solution that would meet and exceed our customer service expectations at all levels. Oakley Alarms has checked all the boxes and continues to go above and beyond on any installation and service expectations I have. Top shelf all around.

Thank you Oakley for the service you provide. I called today to inquire about a service call to replace a battery and spoke Riley. I felt that I was speaking to a friend/family member. This is one thing that ill miss the most once they are acquired by Telus. Thank you Dennis and Oakley Alarms for keeping the same price point through years. We need more businesses like yours🫡🫡

This 5 star review is well deserved. When Bell sold off their residential alarm division in the fall of 2025, we were left to accept the successor, except this transition was not a smooth one, and we received no information whatsoever from our new provider explaining their services. We were not confident our monitoring was still in place! We have an older, but reliable hardwired system. In early November, we had a zone fault in a basement window, and we received no fault notice from our successor company. When we contacted them, we were basically told we need a complete new wireless system.. this was very discouraging! After contacting Oakley, they were courteous, friendly and knowledgeable. A repair technician Joe came to our home, corrected the window fault, and expertly installed an upgrade siren. He informed us, our hardwired system could be upgraded with a cellular module, that we could monitor on our phone. We arranged to have that done. Jesse installed the upgraded control panel module, meticulously checked all entry wirings, and clearly explained our upgraded keypad. We are now good to go with our upgraded system. Thanks Oakley for “coming to the rescue.” Look forward to Oakley monitoring our homes safety. A+

Had Oakley replace my business’s system after my previous monitoring provider was sold to an American firm (BellMTS sold to API) and customer service became horrible. The transition was seamless and they were able to work with my hardwired commercial system perfectly. They managed the whole switch in just a few hours. Great locally owned business and I feel much better about not only the service I will receive but also where my money is going.

Great company. Dennis the salesperson personally drove out to the country to examine the property and give us a quote. Installation was arranged promptly. Installer worked efficiently and gave us a thorough rundown of everything, answering all of our questions. Everybody we dealt with was super friendly, and the hardware/monitoring is really competitively priced. Couldn't have asked for a better experience.
